Being able to sense strain, heating, and other factors on rolling stock or rail is useful and desirable. The traditional method for such instrumentation requires running wire to each and every sensor, a difficult, expensive, and failure-prone process, particularly when hundreds of thousands of cars may require instrumentation.

IEM has developed a number of smart wireless sensor products specifically for the freight rail market, allowing the monitoring of cars, locomotives, and rail traffic without the need for physical connections. Many of these systems can be deployed as needed with no skilled installation required. The wireless systems use IEM’s patent-pending high-speed wireless network approach and can interface directly to existing data collection systems.
