Wireless sensors provide one of the most powerful tools emerging in today’s high-tech world. But ubiquitous sensors mean an omnipresent need to provide power. Line power, of course, contradicts the entire point of a wireless sensor. At the same time it is utterly impractical to change the batteries on hundreds or thousands of sensors, many of which may be in hard-to-access locations.
The solution is power harvesting – using the energy present in the sensor’s environment to run the sensor. IEM has been working in this exciting and challenging field for many years, and our research has resulted in a number of unique new products, especially for use in our core market, railroads.
